It started as a show

Ice Cream Sundays launched on 5 January 2014, a partnership between Illicit Records and DJ Skillz, running weekly out of henryskillz.com.

Live interviews. Live performances. New music, previewed and reviewed. The pitch at the time was no rules and no limitations, and the stage is yours. That has not changed much.

Then radio

Sundays, twelve to three

ICS moved to Energy Groove Radio as a live show, three hours every Sunday, broadcast out of Melbourne and carried into New York, Toronto, Los Angeles and Mexico City.

Guest DJs on rotation. Full interviews. Tribute shows the week the news landed. Australian tours came through it.

Then rooms

The smaller room

The show became nights. Live hip-hop, crate-digging DJ sets, an open room. No corporate sponsorship and no mainstream playlist, which is a decision rather than a shortage.

Hip-hop is the root, not the fence. Our DJs are crate diggers, so a set moves through soul, funk, jazz, boogie, Latin and neo soul as much as it moves through hip-hop, because that is the music hip-hop is made of.

The audience is workers of imagination. Producers, MCs, photographers, designers, DJs. People who make things for a living, in a room together on a weeknight.

Now

All three at once

The room is back at Bodriggy on 24 September. The radio goes back on air on 25 October. The interviews and the guest mixes never really stopped.

ICS is run by Henry Skillz through Holla Back Entertainment, in Melbourne.
